    Implementing an Honors Nonprofit Internship: Hub of HOPE

    Human trafficking is the term used to describe modern-day slavery, which is a global problem, but it is also present here in the United States. During this last year, I have worked with the Northwest Arkansas nonprofit Hub of HOPE. This organization, founded in 2016 by Jennifer Sorey, supports victims of human trafficking and raises awareness by educating Arkansans on the pervasiveness of human trafficking and its implications for our community. As part of my work, I completed the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training to understand how to work with human trafficking victims who are also victims of sexual assault and to provide education to local student nurses. This internship gave me expanded training on the rewards and challenges of working in the nonprofit arena

    Spreadsheet-based GIS Models

    Geographic Information Systems (GIS), which are computer-based systems that allow decision makers to incorporate geographically based data into their analyses, are widespread and powerful tools in many business and scientific settings today. In this paper, we present a tutorial discussing ways in which GIS functionality can be implemented within the spreadsheet environment. We show the straightforward and natural analogy between several GIS functions with spreadsheet functions, particularly for raster based data. We present two realistic examples meshing OR/MS methods with GIS methods --- an integration which is greatly enhanced by the “remarkable development platform” provided by spreadsheets. Neben moderner Infrastruktur und bequemen, flexiblem Raummobiliar können bewegungsfördernde Geräte am Lernort Motivation & Bewegung für die Studierenden bewirken. In einer mehrwöchigen Teststellung mit verschiedenen Standorten wurde ein stromerzeugendes Fahrrad in der Philologischen Bibliothek aufgestellt.Exercise-enhancing devices such as treadmills, desk bicycles or power-generating wheels can be used before, during or after intensive learning phases to increase concentration, exercise and create a stimulating learning environment in the library. The learning space of the library is important for learning, teaching and research. In addition to modern infrastructure and comfortable, flexible room furniture, movement-enhancing devices at the learning location can provide motivation and movement for the students. A power-generating bicycle was set up in the Philological Library in a test position lasting several weeks at various locations

    The paper describes an online cultural training workshop based around the complex Aboriginal Kinship systems used in Australia. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the learning environment where the thematic focus is on relationships and interaction, and how immersive learning and narrative teaching styles work together within a social constructivist approach to deliver this outcome. Prior to discussing how both a social constructivist immersive learning environment achieves such outcomes, the paper will describe the online workshop design in the context of decolonizing mainstream pedagogies

    Archeological Survey and Survey-Level Testing for the Proposed Juan Seguin Park Plaza Project, Harris County, Texas

    J. K. Wagner and Company, Inc. was retained by Harris County Precinct 2 to provide archeological investigations and historic research for the proposed Juan Seguin Park Plaza Project. The project area is owned by Harris County, and the project will be financed with county funds. The project will consist of new construction to update and modify the existing park. The proposed Juan Seguin Park Plaza Project area is located on the west side of Texas Highway 134 at the south Lynchburg Ferry landing in east Harris County, Texas, and is approximately two acres in size. As the investigation revealed, the entire project area was apparently buried to a height above surrounding grades of about six to eight feet by the addition of fill. On September 4, 2010, J. K. Wagner and Company, Inc. conducted an archeological survey with backhoe trenching under the auspices of Texas Antiquities Permit Number 5745. The entire site was subjected to pedestrian survey, and six backhoe trenches were excavated to six to eight feet below existing grade. All backhoe trenches revealed multiple layers of modern fill that included materials such as concrete rubble, asphalt chunks, metal and plastic water pipe segments, and other debris. No evidence of pre-1870s artifacts or features of the Historic period, or of prehistoric or aboriginal sites was encountered. Nothing was collected or curated. Based on those findings, J. K. Wagner and Company, Inc. believes that the area investigated likely contains no cultural evidence or resources worthy of further investigation or eligible for land marking at the local, state, or national levels. Further, J. K. Wagner and Company, Inc. recommends that the proposed project should proceed without further cultural resource investigation. However, if areas outside of those subjected to backhoe trenching in the initial investigation will be impacted deeper than six feet below current grade, those areas should be examined prior to impact

    Implementing Behavior Analysis and Intervention for Individuals with Cognitive Impairments in Skilled Nursing Facilities: Summary of Results

    Summary of Purpose The purpose of the project was to provide behavioral consultation and services to aging persons with cognitive impairment at skilled nursing facilities in Michigan. The goal was to use empirically supported non-pharmacological approaches to reduce behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD; wandering, agitation, disruptive vocalizations, etc.) and help slow down or remediate lost skills, reduce the use of medication to manage BPSD, to improve staff knowledge and abilities, and to develop modules that can be adopted and used by other skilled nursing facilities.The project was led by Dr. Janet Hahn, a social gerontologist with extensive experience studying nursing home culture change and the quality of long-term care services. The intervention project team consisted of doctoral, masters and undergraduate level behavior analysts with advanced training in working with aging populations, under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Baker (doctoral level board certified behavior analyst and behavioral gerontologist). The project was funded by the Civil Money Penalties fund of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services from May 2016 and to April 2019. The project was conducted with oversight by the Western Michigan University Human Subjects Institutional Review Board, under approved protocol HSIRB Project Number 16-09-07, titled Implementing Behavior Analysis and Intervention for Individuals with Cognitive Impairment in Skilled Nursing Facilities
